Wells announces retirement

Harlequins winger Jon Wells, one of a handful of players who began their careers pre-Super League, has announced his retirement at the age of 31 after failing to recover from a neck injury.

Wells began his career with Castleford in 1996 and also had a spell with Wakefield before joining London Broncos in 2003 and is currently enjoying a testimonial season with the club.

"It's been my livelihood for the last 15 years, so it was a very tough decision but in the end it was one I didn't have much choice over," Wells told Sky Sports.

"I had a neck operation at the end of last year, fixed one problem and created another and unfortunately I've not been able to get back to point where I can help the guys out."
