Scorpions name provisional squad

Co-operative Championship One newcomers South Wales Scorpions have named four Wales internationals in their initial 28-man squad for the new season.

The squad, chosen following trials which attracted over 50 players, includes Ashley Bateman, Christiaan Roets and Lee Williams, who all scored tries for Wales in their 28-16 win over Scotland in November's European Cup final, and fellow international Phil Cushion.

Most of the players represented Celtic Crusaders' reserves in 2009 or come from clubs in the Welsh Conference, including two with the same name - David James played for Bridgend Blue Bulls, while his namesake is from Blackwood Bulldogs.

The Scorpions kick off the season against Workington at The Gnoll in Neath on Sunday, February 28.
